How do I become a VATSIM controller?

Hello everyone!

I've been flying on VATSIM for a few months now but now I want to become a controller. I've been searching around on the internet to get information about how to become one but I haven't found a site that I really understood. Could someone explain it to me? Like, what I need, where I can get training and how the ratings works?

Thanks in advance! ;)

Hello Alexander,

you might want to check out this page: http://vatsim-scandinavia.org/training-department/faq/

You need to make sure your VATSIM ID is setup correctly. Visit https://cert.vatsim.net/sso/auth/login/

Once logged in, your "Assignment" should be set to:

Region Europe
Division Europe (except UK)
vACC/ARTCC Scandinavia

When and if everything is setup correctly, visit http://tas.vatsim-scandinavia.org to request training. This might take some time as there are queues. You will eventually receive training, both theoretical and practical, ending with a checkout. If you pass the checkout, you are free to take tower positions (with the exception of major airports) in all countries in VATSIM Scandinavia.

Hope this helps :)

Hello,

I am also intrested in ATC-training but I wonder if it is possible and allowed to use Euroscope and connect to VATSIM as an observer to learn more about how ATC is working in VATSIM before signing up for training?

I am aware that it might be difficult to set up Euroscope correctly etc.

Hello Stefan!

Yes, you can set up EuroScope and connect as an observer. This link might be useful; https://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?t=42815

If it doesn't, just search around online and you'l probably find something. I'm doing my training right now in Sweden to become a controller and I started of just like you. It's also a good way to get more comfortable in the controllers perspective. But if you want to become a controller, request it now because it might take a while until you actually start it.

Hallo Alexander,

thanks for the link.

I found a good tutorial from Vatsim in the reginal group Düsseldorf but was unsure if that is possible in Sweden as well.

Good luck with the training, hope to see you soon in eg ESGG!

/Stefan

Any tutorial about ES will be useful to tell you the basics of how to set up the program and how it works. However, ES is a very powerful tool and can be set up in many different ways. Many of the settings and files will depend on the local setup.

You can find the Swedish ES files here on the website under ATC -> Downloads -> Sweden. The most prominent feature of the Swedish setup is that we use the TopSky plugin which simulates the real life TopSky/COOPANS ATM system. The plugin comes with a comprehensive manual and I would encourage everyone who is interested in controlling in Sweden to install TopSky and get familiarised with the look and feel of the system.
